“The wind blows wherever it wants. You can hear the wind but can’t tell where it’s coming from or where it’s going. And it’s the same with people who are born with the wind.” – BLD
“Seriously, you need to get out more. It’s embarrassing,” He rolls his eyes as his friends hover over him. This isn’t the first time he’s heard this and it definitely won’t be the last. It’s become part of their routine. They finish classes for the day. They head back to their apartment. They plead with him to come out with them. He always says no. They leave without him, have a good time then turn up drunk at 2 am. Then repeat. That’s what made them work well as not only friends but roommates. Plus he wasn’t fond of going out, all people do nowadays is drink away their sorrows and make drunken mistakes. That’s not the life he wanted.
“We do this every week and my answer stays the same. No,” He flips to the next page of his book not bothering to make eye contact. No one is gonna come between him and James Patterson, especially now that he’s five chapters in. Going out wasn’t for him, they know this. So why do they keep at it? They’ll never admit this but they worry about him. An attractive guy in his early twenties should be out enjoying life, not hiding away inside books about characters who thrive off adventure. That’s not healthy. He should be out living his life while he still can, who knows what the future may hold. Every second counts.
“Just tonight. We’re going to this new bar that just opened up in the city, everyone is talking about it. One night and if you don’t like it we will drive you right home and maybe even buy you a new bookshelf or something,” His friend nodded to the overcrowded bookshelf in the corner. He knew mentioning his books would possibly persuade him. Man, does that boy really love his books. He looked over at his bookshelf, he was in need of a new shelf desperately, his books needed a new home.
“If I don’t like it, you’ll drive me right back?” He sat up intrigued. A new bookshelf and a ride home are tempting offers.
“I swear on everything that I own, if you’re not fucking with the night we’ll have you home like the flash,” Was this actually happening? For the first time in nine years were they about to persuade him to go out and live life? Maybe the odds are in their favor tonight.
“Alright fine,” He slammed his book shut carefully setting it on his bed. His friends erupted in cheers. As he put his shoes on, he couldn’t help but let his mind wander. One night out can’t be that bad. What the hell, maybe he should live a little. What’s the worst that could happen, he ends up in a fight with the local gang in town.
****************
“See this isn’t bad at all, admit it you’re having fun,” He rolled his eyes and took another sip of his drink. He couldn’t help but smile, he was having fun. Going out with his friends was a good idea but he won’t make a habit of going out with them.
“Don’t get too cocky or I just might ask to go home,” He couldn’t stop the smile from growing on his face. So much for being smug.
“I don’t know if it’s just me but I think that girl over there is totally checking you out,” He turned his attention to the lone girl sitting at the other end of the bar. She was breathtaking. Her hair was a bright pink and messy but a put together “come look at me” messy. She wore a tight leather dress with ripped fishnets that showed off her legs. Her very toned legs. A leather jacket was thrown over her shoulder. Half on, half off. She’s a tease. Wants to be noticed. He couldn’t look away. She illuminated confidence. Soon his brown ones locked with her blue ones. She couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. Do brown and blue mix? She was eager to find out. A smirk grew on her face as she looked away. She noticed him when he first came in with his friends. She could tell that he didn’t go out much, he walked in last allowing his friends to make the entrance, keeping the attention off him. As soon as he walked in, his eyes scanned the room immediately taking mental note of all the emergency exits. She could tell that he liked to plan ahead, to be prepared. She liked that. Order and structure were his friends. that’s good. It means he was pure, untouched, he could be corrupted. Perfect. The world around them faded away as they gazed deeper into each other’s souls. He could see her fire, she liked chaos, she thrived off it. A smirk grew on her face as she stared, this was a game to her. How long before he caves and makes his way towards her? Will he make the first move? They always do for her. His brows furrowed at the smirk on her face. What was she planning? A girl like her always had a plan up her ripped sleeve.
“So how long are you gonna stare at her before you go and talk to her like a human being?” He rolled his eyes but never broke eye contact with her. That was a good question. Should I go talk to her? He watched as she let out a laugh and turned her attention elsewhere.
“C’mon man, that was a perfect opportunity for you to get laid,” His friends hit him on the shoulder.
“Man you need to get out of your head and focus on real life,” For the first time, he realized his friends were right. He spends all his time calculating his next moves instead of taking them. He already took one risk just coming out with them tonight, what’s wrong with taking one more? He grabbed his drink, downing the whole thing before rising from his seat. His friends cheered him on as he made his way towards her. She saw him from the corner of her eye. Right on time.
“Hey,” He stood next to her. Hey. The only word he said was hey. She knew that he wouldn’t have game but really, just “hey.”
“Hey,” All she had to say was hey. What does that mean? Maybe this was a mistake, he should’ve stayed home. This could end in two possible ways: 1) He says the wrong thing causing her to lose interest then he has to hear his buddies drag him for screwing up for the rest of his life or 2) some other much more attractive guy comes and swoops her away from him. Either way, this won’t end well for him.
“Dance with me,” His eyes widened at her demand. Was she serious?
“What?” She shook her head and laughed. He’s cute. Without another word she stood from her seat, grabbing his hand and leading him to the dance floor. His friends watched with wide eyes. No way in hell, him out of all people got a hot girl in a club to dance with him. They were in the center of the dance floor, the center of attention. Their hands explored every acre of each other as their bodies swayed to the beats pumping through the room. Their eyes never left each other as they eliminated the nonexistence space between each other.
“What’s your name?” His voice rasp from the intensity of their dance. Her signature smirk once again danced across her face.
“That’s a secret,” She liked playing this game, it drew them in more making them desperate and she liked them desperate.
“That’s not fair,” his arms snaked around her waist, he needed her close to him. He’s never felt this before, was it normal? She traced the outline of his face mentally laughing as he closed his eyes and sighed. She’s got him now. She stood on her tip toes, lips centimeters away from his ear. She could hear his heart racing, she made him nervous and she liked it.
“Well life’s not fair, love,” She placed a soft kiss below his earlobe. His breathing stopped, an odd sensation flowed through his entire body. Was this lust? Attraction? Love? There’s only one way to test his theory. He quickly leaned in for a kiss but she only smiled and pulled away.
“Eager are we?” She took a step back, watching as he quickly nodded his head yes. He wanted more and he wanted it badly. Perfect.
“You have to be patient, love,” She placed a soft kiss on his cheek then slowly walked away.
“How long do I have to wait?” He couldn’t help but feed into her game, there was something about her that just lured him in. He wanted to know her, to be around her. She’s playing a game with him and he knows it, but he doesn’t care.
“Not long,” She winked and slowly disappeared into the crowd. His scanned the room for any trace of her light blue hair but he couldn’t find it. She was gone. For now. He made his way back to his friends who were waiting for him with large smiles.
“And you didn’t want to come out tonight,” His friends teased him as they sent playful winks in his direction.
“Did you get her number?” He shook his head as he looked back into the crowd of sweaty bodies.
“No,” He eyes continued to scan the room. He knew she was gone but deep down he hoped maybe she was still around somewhere watching him.
“How is it that you manage to dance with the hottest girl in this place and don’t get her number. Seriously, for someone as smart as you that was dumbest thing you could’ve ever done,” His friends were in awe. Only he could get the attention of the sexiest girl in the building and fuck this up. What luck he has.
“Excuse me,” They all turned towards the bartender who pulled a folded up napkin out of his apron.
“A girl with blue hair told me to give this to you,” Once the words blue hair left the bartender’s lips, his eyes quickly went back to scanning the room.
“Thanks man,” His friend opened the napkin and soon him and the others erupted in cheers. He grabbed the napkin from them, reading the message that was left for him:
“4425 Rocky Drive. July 15, 2019 @ 10pm.
Don’t be late.
-Hayley”
Right next to her name, was a kiss mark in Crimson Red lipstick.
